Some thing. That I have.
Recently I learned that I belonged to the Cult of Satan. Right on.
Cool, I've never been in a cult before. I feel all special now. I mean, I never thought of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as a cult. We don't do 'culty' things, I don't think. Let's Wikipedia it, shall we? My response in bold.

The Merriam-Webster online dictionary lists five different definitions of the word "cult."[15]

1. Formal religious veneration-
Um, like...a religion? Like, Baptists, Catholics, Protestants, yes, Mormons???

2. A system of religious beliefs and ritual; also: its body of adherents;-
-Like any organized religion???

3. A religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious; also: its body of adherents;
-Okay, I'll concede this one, I mean, we do believe that God hasn't stopped speaking to his beloved children. Crazy thought...

4. A system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator;
-Someone's going to have to explain that one to me, I have no idea what it means. Like, faith healing? Because we don't roll with that. We like doctors and pills, or at least I do.

5. Great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book).
-Great devotion...like...to God, for example?

Okay, so I'll give you this...I only took the first definition off of the Wiki page for that, but I didn't want this article to drag.
Looks like I AM in a cult! Cool!!!
But wait, I'm not very special, because according to that, so is everyone else. Oh, man! That sucks. Let's look up some more stuff.

Potential harm to members

In the opinion of Benjamin Zablocki, a professor of Sociology at Rutgers University, groups that have been characterized as cults are at high risk of becoming abusive to members. He states that this is in part due to members' adulation of charismatic leaders contributing to the leaders becoming corrupted by power. Zablocki defines a cult here as an ideological organization held together by charismatic relationships and that demands total commitment.

--We are asked to commit to our Father in Heaven's plan for us, but we are always given the agency to make decisions for ourselves.  If someone leaves, we mourn for them, but we'll never force anyone to do anything.--

According to Barrett, the most common accusation made against groups referred to as cults is sexual abuse. See some allegations made by former members. According to Kranenborg, some groups are risky when they advise their members not to use regular medical care.[59] Barker, Barrett, and Steven Hassan all advise seeking information from various sources about a certain group before getting deeply involved, though these three differ in the urgency they suggest.

Sexual Abuse???  Like Catholic priests preying on small boys??  Huh.

Looks like I'm not the only one.
I may be in a cult, but that's my right.  Just like it's yours to not join my "Cult of Satan."
That's the great thing about America.  I can join whatever religion I want, and you can't stop me.

Not that people didn't try, back when it was first founded.  Massacres, murders, driving Mormons all the way out of the States and into a desert wasteland...freedom of religion, huh?

Thank you to our resident "hater" for the inspiration for this article.

So the bold didn't work so well. I posted using the forums, it was an experiment and it failed. But I tried to separate my replies from the Wikipedia comments...hope it makes sense.

It's just like the people who get all uppity and say that Mormons aren't Christians.

I don't care if they think I'm Christian or not.  THEIR opinion about me is worth about two squirts of owl doodie, as whip would put it.

Ach!  The formatting is totally lame and NOT what it was supposed to be!  Grr...

Hello?  Nobody love me...or hates me...or cares...at all...about my cult.  *sniff*

on Jun 03, 2008

I don't really know what to say about this.  I also thought there was something vaguely cultish about RC, with its slavish obedience of centuries old protocol and the little understanding it has or desires to have of the modern world.

Of course, there is the numerous incidents around the world of RC and other demonation's priests being caught engaged in sexual activities.  Maybe it IS a cult with just a lot more people sucked in to believing it.

I don't want to call anyone else's religion a cult.  For one thing, I probably only have a vague understanding of other religion's or denomination's beliefs.  I also have always had a problem with the "I'm right, you're wrong, we're going to heaven, you're going to hell" theology.  I believe that there are many paths and it's not for me to judge.

For the record, I missed whatever inspired this post.

btw, I just responded so you would feel loved ~in spite of the fact that you're a cultist - lol.

Have you taken into consideration the commonality of a good portion of cults? This being, of course, secret "ordinances" and practices that involve promises of strict obedience, often blood oaths and death threats. You know, like the ones where God tells a prophet or someone something and they aren't supposed to tell anyone because they aren't ready? I'm sure that's just never happened in Christian history...or their Judaic history.

Take the apostate, "Cult of Satan" temples for instance.  They have their temples that you can't know what goes on inside because, of course, the Satanists really care if you talk about what you can find out ourself by going.  'Cause it really effects you if you haven't committed to it, so they care that you know.  So, losing the sarcasm for a moment, oh wait..it really DOESNT apply to you!  So why would they care lest, perhaps, God considers it to be sacred.

Of course, NOBODY ever had temples with stars and signs, symbols and tokens of God on them..

Oh

But wait. That does go back to the Masons, doesn't it?

But they aren't too old...they started maybe just a few thousand years.  So where did they get it?  Oh darn. Didn't the "origional Christians" (the Jews) have temples with ceremonies that symbolized pretty much the same stuff?

Well shoot. That's a really old cult you've got there, cedarbird. I wonder if...no! It couldn't be..

Was it started by God? *gasp!*

Wait, if the Cult of Satan can tace it's roots back to the oldest religion (the very same religion that our dear friend who named the LDS Church 'The Cult of Satan' claims to be a part of) they practice the same doctrine of Love, Kindness, Charity and Hope that Christ himself taught.  Oh, and they believe God still speaks to His children that He Loves.  They donate millions of dollars a year to improving the quality of life for millions of people around the world...even *gasp!* non-Christians!

Although they do send those nice young boys to your door at 10AM on Sat morning to wake you up and .  But shoot, even those boys will weed your garden for free.

Well, it looks like this cult has alot of good attributes.  I am getting pretty tired of the hellfire and brimstone that I read from the "Christ-like" Christians who have a "holy hatred" towards the "Cult of Satan."  You know what, I just got my tax rebate check. I'm in a good mood. If that's what Satan's church is, maybe it's time I take a swim with him.

Those are lousy definitions, Merriam-Webster.

I'll unite with you, you little cultist! ;~D

I've been invited to quite a few services at these temples.

What you've been invited to was probably our Sunday service. All of our chapels are open to the public, anyone can come and sit in on our meetings. The temples, however, are different. You need a 'temple recommend' to go to one of these because there are some very sacred ceremonies that occur in them. Ted could probably give you a more...accurate explanation and answer questions. But he's right, we don't discuss what goes on in the temple because it is too sacred.

I'd join yours but I need to recruit for mine, little birdy. Wanna join the 'let's bump karma-ooglies cult?'

Yes!!!!!

archaicremembrance: I don't know you, but I like you already!!!

Ah...shucks! I feel loved!

Mormon Kool-Aid depends on where you live. If you live in Utah it is made into green Jell-O with Carrot shavings. ;~D

It was just the comments on Ted's article about "Faith, it's part of Science, too."

It got a little heated, and we were called cultists and Joseph Smith was called an idiot...blah blah...it wasn't pretty.

And I thought it'd be kind of fun.

Our favorite missionaries preferred rootbeer, so we always made sure we had a couple of bottles cold when they'd come visiting on Tuesday nights. (we had a standing date with 'em until they got sent home. their replacements seemed scared of us and only visited one time.)

HAHAHAHA, you had favorite missionaries??

That's awesome.
